I always individually tailor my lessons around my student's musical preferences and learning needs.

Learn Your Favourite Music

I cover a wide range of musical styles in my lessons. Everything from Pop to Rock and Metal, from Blues and Jazz to Country and Classical, Reggae to Ska and beyond. Whether you want to learn to strum chords, learn music theory, do grade exams, learn to solo with freedom on the fretboard or just play your favourite songs, I can help you reach your musical potential.

Students of Any Ability Welcome

I am a professional guitar teacher and active session guitarist in the music industry who teaches students of all ages and abilities in the Cheshunt/Hertfordshire area. I truly know that anyone can learn to play the guitar and I would be delighted help you achieve your musical goals rapidly.

Matt's Experience as a Session Guitarist

"Since first picking up the guitar aged 8, Matt fell in love with the instrument and has never put it down since! He is a qualified and experienced teacher having undertaken many years of musical training, achieving GCSE Music, a Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Music performance and a First-Class BA Honours Degree in Popular Music. Since graduating University Matt has taught over 4,000 guitar lessons to students of all ages and abilities within Guitar Lessons Cheshunt, and for local music schools such as HCM Music Academy and Hertfordshire Music Service.

In his career as a session guitarist, Matt has had the pleasure of performing and recording live accross the world with an array of artists and bands. Some artists Matt has worked with include Elliott Randall (Steely Dan), Adam Slack (The Struts), Kelsy Karter, Jemma Johnson, Twister, Matt Peach, Wendy Martin, Camilla Yates, The Leicester Symphony Orchestra, Cam Mannix and many more with recordings and live sessions receiving national airplay on BBC radio and local television. With these bands Matt has had the pleasure to share the bill with artists such as Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds, The QuireboysTwin Atlantic, Sea Girls and Holly Humberstone in venues up to 40,000 capacity.

Though Matt is an educator, he is always keen to learn and expand his reserve of knowledge. This has led him to study under some of the most inspiring figures in the music business such as Joel Hoesktra (Whitesnake, Cher, Rock of Ages) Elliott Randall (Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, John Lennon) and Tony Platt (ACDC, Bob Marley, Paul McCartney). Matt often is inspired to pass on the nuggets of wisdom and techniques he has learned from these mentors to students on their own musical journeys."

More About My Teaching

I have many years of experience teaching complete beginner students of all ages from 8 to 80 (and beyond!) the electric, acoustic and bass guitar. I understand what it takes to learn, that learning an instrument isn't a 'one size fits all' approach and how we can make learning easy and engaging for you. I'm proud to have a 100% exam pass rate and have taught many beginner students during my time as a guitar teacher, as well as those who are revisiting the guitar after several years away - helping them learn the music that they are passionate about and finding more happiness and fulfilment in their lives.

I am a specialist in working with intermediate guitarists as a mentor on how to develop their music theory knowledge, break out of scale boxes and play more interesting lead solos with improvisation, develop stagecraft with a band, get into a music university, or just get them inspired and out of a rut they may be stuck in.

I enjoy creating unique lesson plans tailored to my student's individual goals and learning needs, to save them valuable time and effort with the insights I have gained from my own experience. Together we can create a plan for you designed for rapid progress while learning the music you truly love.

Student Testimonials

  • “Matt has deep industry knowledge and connections which enables him to teach some techniques that you might not learn from anywhere else. His lessons are really engaging and I always come out of his lessons with so much more knowledge. He has also given me the confidence to study music at University – without him, I don’t think I’d be where I am right now. I would really recommend Matt as your teacher if you’re a beginner or if you would like some lessons just to top up your skills.”
Rhiannon – Guitar student of three years.

  • "I have learnt a lot from Matt and really enjoy my lessons. He is very flexible in his approach and mixes practical, technical and theory in his teaching. In his lessons I've tried bass, acoustic and electric guitar and feel his teaching style suits all three and has made me more confident in my playing"
Thomas - Guitar student of five years.

  • Matt is equally as skilled at teaching guitar as he is at playing it, working closely with the students to help them learn through playing the music that they love. This student-focused approach has seen him quickly become one of the leading guitar tutors in Northampton and his desire to continue to develop as a guitarist and guitar teacher will see him continue to draw in students from across Northamptonshire to take lessons with him.
